Encouraging curious travelers to reconnect with the landscape (and each other), the 18-room Highlander Mountain House feels like your own private Blue Ridge retreat—equal parts Appalachian lodge and refined English country estate. After an afternoon exploring the area’s primordial network of trails, trout streams, rivers, waterfalls, and pristine forests, curl up with a hot toddy or restorative cup of tea by the wood-burning stone fireplaces in the lobby and dining room at The Ruffed Grouse, the inn’s elevated, all-day tavern, and plot your next adventure.

Built in 1885—reportedly for a retired sea captain from Charleston, South Carolina—the clapboard mountain farmhouse maintains many of the period architectural details such as the original wood flooring and exposed timber framing, but there’s no lack of modern amenities or contemporary finishes.

The Highlander’s updated design narrative is rooted in the region and draws on the area’s unspoiled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage—from the Cherokee tribes to the Scots-Irish homesteaders to the moonshiners and the avant-garde artists who taught and studied at nearby Black Mountain College. The resulting design is a suitably eclectic mix. Bespoke furniture, antiques, custom lighting, whimsical wallpaper, and quirky art and artifacts like Victorian-era taxidermy create a space that’s as inspiring as it is inviting. Late check-out (after 11:00 AM and before 1:00 PM) may result in a fee.

Property and Cancelation Policies :
Cancellation: To receive a refund, you must notify us 14 days prior to your arrival. If we do not have a 14 day notice, you will be charged for the entire reservation (unless we are able to re-rent the room for the duration). For special events, such as weddings and holidays and the month of October, there is a 30 day cancellation period. If we do not have a 30-day notice you will be charged for the entire reservation (unless we are able to re-rent the room for the duration). Acts of God such as weather, fire, flood and other events out of our control (including Epidemics/Pandemics) do not supersede our cancellation policy.
***If you have moved a reservation over from the original dates to new dates because of COVID and need to cancel the reservation for a 2nd time, a refund will not be issued but a credit will be held in your name for a future stay that will expire one year from the original reservation dates. If COVID persists after that 1 year allowance, management will determine an extension to use said credit.
For all cancellations made in the required cancellation period (14 days/30 days or more prior to check in date), a refund of your deposit made will be returned to the credit card on file. Early departures are treated as cancellations and are subject to our cancellation policies. Departures before or after check in due to failure to comply with our policies (such as 3-night min. stay in Oct. and on Holidays) are also treated as cancellations.

Check in: 3pm Check-Out: 11:00 a.m or Before. (Exceptions can be made upon approval, vacancy and availability) 
Payment: Payment in full for the room(s) is required upon check-in. We accept VISA, MC, DISCOVER, AMEX and/or Cash. 
Food and Beverages: Food and alcoholic beverages are additional and are available in our restaurant.
Smoking: We are a non-smoking facility. If two staff members verify the smell of smoke in your room, your credit card will be charged an additional $500.00 for airing, cleaning and lost room revenue.
Children: Children 4 years and older are allowed to stay on property in both houses. Please call for specifics regarding our child policy.  
Pet Policy: Please call us regarding exact details of our pet policy as we do have breed restrictions.
Parking: As we have a parking lot, we have limited spots. There is additional street parking on Oak Street behind the Inn. 
Damages to the property will be billed to your credit card.
Special Needs or Handicap Access: Due to the age of the building, all rooms require some stairs.
While we have attempted to itemize our conditions, policies may change. New policies supersede this list.
Updated July 1st, 2020:  Covid-19 reschedule policy : In the event a reservation was moved over to a new date to accommodate a rescheduled event, any deposit that was moved over becomes non-refundable if the reservation has to be cancelled after the change. A credit in the guest's name will be held on file for a future reservation up to one year of the original reservation dates. If Covid-19 persists passed the one year, it is in our discretion to approve an extension of up to two years from the original reservation dates. 
Highlander Mountain House's liability does not exceed the cost of the room. Any arrangements or reservations made by Highlander Mountain House on your behalf are made in good faith. We are not responsible for cancellations or errors made by other vendors.
HMH has the right to cancel any reservations at any time due to unforeseen circumstances. In this event, a full refund of any deposit made will be given back to the guest.  
Reservations are confirmed upon receipt of a one night deposit. No refunds are made after arrival. Internet specials that were not available at the time of booking a reservation will not be applied. Rates are subject to change without prior notice.
Use of Personal Information: HMH does not use the guests personal information for any other reason but to reserve/book a room. We will not give or sell your information to any other 3rd party affiliate.
