The Santa Cruz Hostel is located in the historic 1880’s Carmelita Cottages on Beach Hill in Santa Cruz, California – a lovely oceanside community just steps from the beach, boardwalk, wharf and town! Occupying 5 historic cottages, this casual hostel is a 3-minute walk from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Cowells Beach and the Wharf. Our cozy hostel offers dorm beds, private rooms and cottage rentals. Guests can enjoy common areas like a kitchen, dining room, garden, BBQ grill, and laundry facility. 

Each year we welcome hundreds of families, surfers and beach lovers from around the world who come to experience all things Santa Cruz. We are located 80 miles south of San Francisco, 40 miles north of Monterey, and 40 miles southwest of San Jose. Providing you with the perfect stop on your journey along the Pacific Coast of the United States.

The Santa Cruz Hostel is a 501c3 nonprofit, working hard to fulfill our mission: To help people of all ages gain a greater knowledge, understanding and love of the world through hosteling!

Terms and Conditions

REQUIREMENTS FOR GUEST STAY

  1. Must be 18 or older (unless traveling with parent or legal guardian, and booking a private room)
  2. Bring valid government issued ID + Debit/Credit Card in your name. 
  3. We do not accept 3rd party payment. The credit card or debit card used for payment must belong to at least one of the guests staying overnight in our facility.
PRE-PAYMENT IS REQUIRED
At time of reservation, credit card is charged for the full reservation amount. Space is not held without a paid reservation. Cash is accepted for walk-in reservations, but a credit card must be presented and held on file with a $200 authorization in the event of any incidentals.  WE DO NOT ACCEPT 3RD PARTY PAYMENTS. The name on the card used for payment must belong to at least one of the guests staying overnight in our facility. Please book only if you have confirmed your travel plans as a portion of your booking is always nonrefundable.

SELF CHECK-IN: 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM (No check-ins after 10PM)

Rooms are accessible after 4:00 pm each day. We allow overnight guests to store their luggage in our office prior to arrival or after departure. The office is open from 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM daily, however, staff are available 24 hours a day in case of an emergency.

Quiet hours begin at 10PM as a courtesy to other guests we can not accommodate check-ins after 10:00 PM. Please plan accordingly. There is no curfew for guests staying in our property once you are checked in, though we remind everyone quiet hours are in effect from 10pm-8am nightly.


CHECK-OUT (BY 11AM)
Check-out is before 11:00 AM. Please strip linens from all used beds (sheets, pillowcase and blanket cover) and put them in the laundry bin in Longhouse. Sign the departure sheet on the clipboard above to the laundry bin to let our staff know you have departed.
If you would like to extend your stay, please book additional nights via our website or see the staff member onsite to arrange payment prior to checkout. Help yourself to free coffee and tea in the morning. If you would like to keep anything in the fridge, label it with your name and check-out date.

LOCATION
We are located at 321 Main Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060. Santa Cruz Hostel is located in the area of Santa Cruz known as "Beach Hill", specifically between Downtown and the Boardwalk. We are 2 blocks from the beach, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Santa Cruz Wharf which is home to restaurants, amusement park and water activities. We are 4 blocks from Pacific Ave which runs through the heart of downtown Santa Cruz and has fun bars, restaurants, music venues and Museum of Art and History (MAH). The hostel office is open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Our staff are usually present around the hostel throughout the day but you can also reach us by calling or texting (831) 423-8304. 

PARKING
Peak season is May to September. Parking is extremely difficult during peak season. Start sending out all your positive parking spot finding vibes at least 30 minutes prior to arrival.

Seasonally free street parking is available out front of the hostel between September 30th and May 15th. After May 15th it becomes residential permit parking only. Metered parking is available on 1st, 2nd and Front street surrounding the hostel and is enforced everyday 8am-8pm. When available, daily parking permits can be purchased for $10 each at check-in. Please park in the loading zone out front to unload your bags and inquire about parking.

 
MISCELLANEOUS
-There are laundry facilities available for a small fee that are located in Longhouse. Inside Longhouse, we have a common space with TV and kitchen (stocked with salt & pepper, condiments and spices). You are welcome to use the BBQ grill and patio tables in the courtyard. We look forward to hosting your stay!
-Space in all rooms is very limited. We ask guests not to bring more than 2 bags with them and to keep all bags stored under your bed. Lockers are available to secure valuables for free but guests will need to provide their own lock. 
-Maximum stay within one calendar year is 14 days.


RULES FOR GUEST STAY
  1. Be Decent. Guest(s) are expected to respect and be courteous to other guests. Individuals who disrupt peace and create tension with other guests may be removed from the property without a refund. Any guest who is the subject of complaint from two or more unrelated parties will be removed from the property without a refund. This harmonious community policy is essential for an enjoyable experience for every guest.
  2. We take the safety of our guests and their belongings seriously. We reserve the right to refuse service to individuals who pose the risk of harm to themselves and/or others. If you see anything alarming, please alert our hostel staff immediately. Guests are encouraged to secure valuables in lockers or reserve private accommodations. The hostel assumes no responsibility for items or vehicles stored in our facility. CCTV is in use outside in the courtyard only. Tampering with equipment is strictly prohibited.
  3. No unregistered guests on the property. Our cottages are for paid overnight-guest use only. For the safety of all of our guests, we do not permit visitors to come back to the property with you. Our hostel cannot be used for parties, meetings, or as event space. 
  4. No smoking or vaping allowed on the property. Evidence of smoking (of any kind) inside will result in a minimum $250 cleaning charge.
  5. Pets of any kind are not permitted on the property with the exception of service animals.  Emotional support animals are not permitted.
  6. Quiet hours are from 10pm-8am in rooms and in communal spaces. We want you to enjoy yourself, but please be respectful of other guests’ experiences at the hostel.
  7. Alcohol Policy: Beer & wine are permitted in indoor community areas and the kitchen. Liquor is not allowed. No alcohol shall be stored or consumed in guest rooms. The hostel prohibits the possession, use, or distribution of drugs and alcohol on the hostel property. By booking, guest(s) agree to decent and orderly behavior at all times. Any appearance of public intoxication is a ground for removal from the hostel. Not allowed in the park.
  8. Be Clean. Santa Cruz Hostel is a self-catering hostel. All guests are expected to clean and pick up after themselves. Self-cleaning includes, but is not limited to, wiping down the bath and washing area after use, cleaning the dishes, silverware, and cookware before and after cooking; and properly disposing of trash. Guests staying in shared accommodations are expected to keep their personal items organized, clean, and out of walkways so all beds and doors are accessible. If you damage our property, you will be held financially responsible for any damages.
LIABILITY
This agreement releases Santa Cruz Hostel Society, LLC dba Santa Cruz Hostel from all liability relating to injuries that may occur in the course of my stay at the property. By making a reservation, I agree to hold Santa Cruz Hostel entirely free from any liability, including financial responsibility for injuries incurred, regardless of whether injuries are caused by negligence. By booking, I forfeit all right to bring a suit against Santa Cruz Hostel for any reason. I will make every effort to obey safety precautions as listed in writing and as explained to me verbally. I will ask for clarification when needed.
