Situated just 400 m from the main street of Airlie Beach and located directly in front of the bus transit centre, Backpackers By The Bay offers relaxed accommodation and is in a convenient location to enjoy Airlie's nightlife. Free WiFi and internet access are available. The large, environmentally-friendly hostel is fully equipped with a shared kitchen, laundry, pool, hammocks, outdoor exercise station area, BBQ and library. Free tea and coffee is available all day at the hostel. All rooms are serviced daily. Backpackers By The Bay was the first backpackers hostel built in Airlie Beach, back in 1986. It is still the only purpose-built backpackers in the area. The owners, Peter and Carolyn Upton, are avid travelers and believe the best experiences when travelling involve the people you meet along the way. To that end, the main focus of the hostel is on guest-interaction.What's more, we are proud to boast the hostel has been the first meeting place for a number of guests and/or staff who have gone on to marry, have children together and continue to keep in touch with us! Property and Cancelation Policies :
Cancellation is free of charge 48 hours prior to arrival. Per example, if the booking is for the 24th of January, it can be cancelled for free until the 21st at 11:59pm. Cancellations made after this time will incur a charge of one night’s accommodation for each guest booked. The charge will be debited to the credit card you have provided with the booking. Your acceptance of this booking implies acceptance of our cancellation policy.
Failure to arrive at the Hostel on the scheduled date or advise of a cancellation will result in the charge of a no show fee equal to one night’s accommodation for each bed booked at the quoted rate. This will be charged to the method of payment advised at the time of booking. The remainder of your booking will be cancelled at this time.
Terms and Conditions
Office Hours:
Due to Covid, we have made some changes to the way we operate. While the hostel itself is open and accessible to you 24/7, our office hours have been limited. Reception is now open between 8.30am – 11.30am and again at 4.00 – 7.00pm every day. If you are arriving outside these hours, we will leave an envelope with your name marked on it at our reception desk and your room key will be inside it.
Arrival Details:
If you are arriving into Airlie Beach by coach, you will see the hostel from the bus terminal as we are directly across the road, approximately a 5 minute walk. Go to your right when you arrive at the roundabout then go up the stairs on the other side of the road to access the hostel faster. If you are arriving by plane to Whitsunday Coast/Proserpine airport or by train to the Proserpine train station, the local buses company – provide the cheapest option to get to the hostel. Let the driver know you are staying with us and he/she will drop you at our door. You can book your tickets ahead of time online by going to

Check-In:
We will check you in as soon as your room is available so you don’t need to wait around. The rooms are usually ready by 11:30am but you have access to all the hostels facilities from the time you arrive. Please have a valid ID ready for check in.
Booking Sailing Tours:
If you are thinking about doing an overnight sailing trip, we can help you! For most people, the easiest option is to wait until you get to Airlie Beach and then speak to us at reception. This way we can show you all the options, let you know about any last-minute standby rates that we are offered and also plan the departure date to make sure the weather is perfect for your trip. For some people though, these plans need to be made ahead of time and we are more than happy to help you before you arrive in town too. All the rates include taxes. We accept payment by way of CASH (AUD), EFTPOS, VISA or MASTERCARD. Surcharge fees of 1.5% apply to card transactions. All rates are subject to change.
Please note that we don't any booking for groups of more than 4 people as we can't accommodate a high number of guests.
