But the real highlight of the Wilmot Wilderness Retreat is its location. The cottage is on 3.8 hectares (38,000 m2) of magnificent gardens and bushland, including a mini waterfall and stunning rural views. The gardens were established by Don Dosser, a world-renowned rhododendron breeder, and are home to approximately 132 varieties of Rhododendrons and around 300 Japanese Maples. A creek and waterfall at the bottom of the garden are also home to native wildlife, providing endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation. In addition to outdoor activities, Wilmot Wilderness Retreat is located near some of Tasmania's top attractions. Cradle Mountain, with its stunning hiking trails and breathtaking scenery, is just a short drive away. You can also explore the nearby national parks through a variety of activities like mountain biking and scenic drives. If you're looking for a more relaxed experience, you can stay at the cottage and soak the day away in the outdoor bath. The garden has been a lifelong love and passion, through the hybridizing of Rhododendrons; with approximately 132 varieties out of the 200 planted having names, leaving over 60 plus varieties of other Rhododendrons present. Many of the Rhododendrons have been named after people, such as 'Elissa' and 'Peggy Charlotte'. These magnificent gardens were originally created by Don Dosser. The collection of some 300 Japanese Maples, 5 varieties, vary in age and sizes, some are approximately 50 years old, and extended throughout the garden. There are also 200 Conifers (some Junipers) throughout, around 75 of which are rare collectibles of different sizes and ages. The annual rainfall of some 1450mm (57 inches) is nature's way in this area and is sufficient with no further watering required. Don Dosser was the world's greatest rhododendron breeder as well as azaleas, maples, and conifers. Follow the walkways around the land, and you will forever be finding new things and places to enjoy. This cosy cottage is exactly what you would imagine from a home in the middle of the wilderness - unique, wooden, and full of surprises. Cathedral ceilings with exposed beams stand out throughout the entire home, while a revere cycle air conditioner provides that unbeatable warm and homely feeling. The cottage has an open-plan kitchen and living space is bordered with windows, allowing day-long sunlight and views over the land. The bathroom features a bath as well as a toilet. The bedroom is well sized and centrally located to the rest of the house.
