In this house full of stories, in 2021 we decided to add one more.
Following in the footsteps of Mr. António Seara and Mr. Giorgio Formica, who offered so much to this house and to Vila de Belver, with their innovative and entrepreneurial traits, we began to write our history with a new name – “A Saboeira” , at Casa Covão da Abitureira.
And why “A Saboeira”?
The answer leads us to talk about soap. In this village, there was once the Fábrica Real de Sabão, where the so-called “soft soap” was manufactured, typically used for washing clothes and fabrics. Currently, there is the Soap Museum in Vila de Belver, one of four in the world. People born in this village were called soapmakers, due to the importance that this industry had in its history. Now, the name was chosen precisely because it is through the hands of a soap maker – Engrácia Martins Alves, that this house takes on another life.
Once an espadrille factory, built in 1937 by the hands of António Seara, it was transformed in 2006 into rural tourism (Casa Covão da Abitureira), thanks to the touch of Giorgio Formica and his family. It is possible to observe, in every nook and cranny, the tastes, creativity, historical influences and personal experiences of each of these gentlemen, which culminate in a space rich in culture, history and, without a doubt, a lot of love and dedication. And, of course, don't forget the unique surroundings where the house is located, surrounded by nature and right next to our Tagus River, with all the richness of this same ecosystem.
