Monterey Hostel offers clean, safe, and memorable overnight lodging where travelers can connect with one another, share resources to reduce their impact on the planet, and experience the natural beauty of the Central Coast. We are a nonprofit lodging provider committed to making Monterey Bay more accessible by offering communal and private lodging to school groups, families, and travelers. We are located 3 blocks from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, and the beach. Guests can enjoy free wifi and a communal kitchen (before 10pm), dining room, laptop counter, outdoor deck, and courtyard.

The standard* booking cancellation notification requirement is a minimum of 48 hours prior to 8 am of the check-in date for a 75% refund. 25% of the total is always nonrefundable. No refunds are offered within 48 hours. We recommend waiting to book until you have confirmed your travel plans, as no booking is fully refundable. Terms and Conditions
REQUIREMENTS FOR GUEST STAY
- Must be 18 or older (unless traveling with a parent or legal guardian, AND booking a private room)
- Bring a valid government-issued ID + Debit/Credit Card in your name.
- We do not accept 3rd party payment. The credit card or debit card used for payment must belong to at least one of the guests staying overnight in our facility. Please be prepared to show your card and ID at check-in.
At the time of booking, your debit/credit card is charged for the full reservation amount. Space is not held without a paid reservation. Cash is accepted for walk-in reservations, but a credit card must be presented and held on file with a $200 authorization in the event of any incidentals. WE DO NOT ACCEPT 3RD PARTY PAYMENTS. The name on the card used for payment must belong to at least one of the guests staying overnight in our facility. Please book only if you have confirmed your travel plans as a portion of your booking is always nonrefundable.
SELF CHECK-IN: 4-10 PM (No check-ins after 10 PM)
- We are a small operation and do not hold regular office hours. Someone from our team is on-site daily to oversee the hostel and is on-call for overnight emergencies. All guests must self-check in between 4-10 PM by providing us with a copy of each adult's US driver's license or foreign passport. Self-check-in instructions and door codes will be sent your way around noon on your arrival date. Guests have the option of accessing the entrance and their room via their smartphone or a unique PIN code once we verify their photo ID.
Quiet hours begin at 10 PM and we are unable to accommodate arrivals after this time. Please plan accordingly. There is no curfew for guests staying on our property once you are checked in, though we remind everyone quiet hours are in effect at 10pm nightly.
CHECK-OUT (BY 11AM)
Check-out is before 11:00 AM. Please strip sheets and pillowcases from all used beds and put them in the laundry bins in the reception area. Please sign the departure sheet to let our staff know you have departed. If you want to extend your stay, please book additional nights via our website.
LOCATION
We are located at 778 Hawthorne Street, Monterey CA 93940. We are located in the "Lighthouse District" in the neighborhood called "New Monterey". We are 3 blocks from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, and the ocean! Staff are usually present around the hostel throughout the day, but you can also reach us by emailing info@montereyhostel.com.
PARKING
Guests who stay Sunday-Wednesday get free parking! For guests booking Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, parking is available in the hostel parking lot for $10/night per vehicle and includes a carbon offset paid to a Monterey-based nonprofit specializing in zero-waste events and environmental stewardship. Please email or text us your vehicle description and license plate prior to arrival. There is free street parking available throughout our neighborhood from 6pm-8am. Public street parking is metered or time-limited during the day.
MISCELLANEOUS
- Our community areas are available for all guests to use. We have a communal kitchen stocked with cookware, dishes, a fridge, induction burners, an air fryer, and a small countertop oven. We do not have a freezer or ice machine, but there is a 7/11 nearby that sells ice if it's needed.
- Outdoor self-storage lockers are $5/day and are large enough to hold a standard-size bike. We offer self-service storage for kayaks, surfboards, wetsuits, scuba gear, and bikes.
-Space in shared dorms is very limited. We ask guests not to bring more than 2 bags with them and to keep all bags stored under their beds. Small lockers are available to secure valuables for free, but guests will need to provide their own lock.
RULES FOR GUEST STAY
- Be Decent. Guest(s) must respect and be courteous to other guests. Individuals who disrupt the peace and create tension with other guests or staff will be removed from the property without a refund. Any guest subject to a complaint from two or more unrelated parties will be removed from the property without a refund. This harmonious community policy is essential for an enjoyable experience for every guest.
- We take the safety of our guests and their belongings seriously. We reserve the right to refuse service to individuals who pose the risk of harm to themselves and/or others. If you see anything alarming, please alert our staff immediately. Guests are encouraged to secure valuables in lockers or reserve private accommodations. The hostel assumes no responsibility for items or vehicles stored on our property. CCTV is in use in indoor and outdoor public areas only. Tampering with equipment is strictly prohibited.
- No unregistered visitors on the property. Our property is for paid overnight guest use only. For all guests’ safety, we do not permit visitors to come to the hostel with you. Shared accommodations are solely for the occupants assigned to that room. Parties and soliciting are strictly prohibited.
- No smoking or vaping is allowed indoors or within 25 feet of our building. Smoking on the deck, near windows, or exits is strictly prohibited. Evidence of smoking (of any kind) indoors will result in a minimum $250 cleaning charge.
- Pets of any kind are not allowed on the property, including emotional support animals.
- Quiet hours are from 10 PM-8 AM in all rooms and communal spaces. Community areas and the kitchen close at 10 PM. We want you to enjoy yourself, but please respect other guests' and neighbors’ experiences. Violators may be removed and charged for the disruption to others.
- Alcohol Policy: Beer and wine are allowed in community areas for guests 21 or older. Liquor is not permitted. No alcohol shall be stored or consumed in guest rooms. The hostel prohibits possessing, using, or distributing substances and alcohol on our property. Guest(s) agree to decent and orderly behavior at all times. Any appearance of intoxication is grounds for removal from the hostel without a refund.
- Be Clean. Monterey Hostel is a self-catering hostel. All guests must clean and pick up after themselves. Self-cleaning includes, but is not limited to, wiping down the shower and bathroom area after use; washing dishes, silverware, and cookware before and after cooking; and properly disposing of trash, recycling, and compost. Guests in shared accommodations must keep their items organized, clean, and out of walkways so all beds and doors are accessible. If you damage our property, we will hold you financially responsible.
LIABILITY
This agreement releases HostelingOn, Inc. dba Monterey Hostel from all liability relating to injuries that may occur in the course of my stay at the property. By making a reservation, I agree to hold Monterey Hostel entirely free from any liability, including financial responsibility for injuries incurred, regardless of whether injuries are caused by negligence. By booking, I forfeit all right to bring a suit against Monterey Hostel for any reason. I will make every effort to obey safety precautions as listed in writing and as explained to me verbally. I will ask for clarification when needed.
