Welcome to our newly constructed Hostel located in the “Coolest Small Town in America”, Grand Marais, Minnesota! Check out our Private Rooms and Shared Bunks, or rent out the Entire Hostel. Located just a short drive outside of the town of Grand Marais , Minnesota,  the Hungry Hippie Hostel is nestled in the hillside overlooking beautiful Lake Superior.  On the edge of the wilderness, a mile off of the Superior Hiking Trail and at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the Hungry Hippie Hostel is a great place to relax after an eventful day of play.  Let us give you a fun, local North Shore experience!  A hostel is a budget orientated, sociable accommodation that is shared among individual travelers and groups for short term stays. We provide common areas and shared facilities with our two and a half bathrooms, cozy lounge, and a primitive kitchenette with a refrigerator, hot plate, microwave and sink. The Hungry Hippie Hostel provides individual or a semi-private group bunk room in our bunkhouse loft or private rooms fully furnished with a queen sized bed at a budget friendly price. Many hostels are located in remarkable buildings. Ours is in our beautiful refurbished barn on our small family farm in Grand Marais.

Welcome to the Hungry Hippie Hostel!! 

We are so excited that you are here! Whether you are adventuring or relaxing, we want you to have a wonderful experience while you’re our guest.

Check-in Instructions:

For Hostel Guests:

    1. Your nameshould be on the chalk board of the room you reserved. 
    2. Private Rooms 1-5 are located on the mainlevel.  Private Room #6 and all 6 Bunksare located in the upper level of the Hostel. To access the upper level you will need to take the stairs at the backof the hostel.  
    3. QUIETHOURS ARE 10pm – 7am   -  Pleasebe courteous of other guests in the hostel. Sounds travels in the hostel.  If you are in the common area talking during quiet hours other guest WILL HEAR YOU! 
    4. There is free locally roasted coffee on the counter by the sink.  
    5. Pots Pans and utensils are located in the cabinets below. The microwave is above the refrigerator. In the refrigerator you will find red or black baskets to store food.  Each basket is for the private rooms.  There is a small refrigerator in the upperlevel as well for guests staying bunks. 
    6. Just past the common area you will see the two bathrooms with showers.  Both Bathrooms have towels, soap andlotion.  Please reuse your towels.  If you are done using your towel please place it in the basket provided.  There is also a half bath upstairs.                                 Summer Months Only – hostel guests can use the Campground Shower House (silverbuilding behind the Hostel).  There are no towels or soap provided in the Shower House. 
    7. The front door stays unlocked and the lights in the common area stay on all night (this is a state law).
    8. Check in time is 4pm to 9pm. Check out time is 11am the following morning. We will gladly be flexible on our check in and check out times, just make arrangements ahead of time
    9. If you have any questions or need assistance during your stay, we live in the tan house onthe property.  The office is located onthe porch of the house and is open daily from 8am – 9pm

    Our cancelation policy: we need a 24 hour notice for any alterations or cancelation, and you will be refunded your money in full. Cancelations and alterations must be confirmed over the phone. If you are reserving the entire Hostel we require a one month notice, and groups of 10 or more require a weeks notice for a full refund.

    We are a pet friendly establishment.  However, we do charge an additional $20.00 cleaning fee for pets.

    We can be reached most days between the hours of 8am-9pm, around the property, cleaning the hostel, or in our home. 

    After hours we can be reached at 218-387-2256. Give us a ring, or just stop by the house.

       *  Quiet hours are from 10pm to 7am (Earlybirds & night owls, please plan accordingly. Making coffee at 5am orcooking a meal at 11pm can be a ruckus to those trying to rest up           for theirnext adventure.)                    
       *  Check in time is between the hours of4pm and 9pm                   
       *  Check out time is 11am the day ofcheck out                     
       *  We have Wi-Fi (password available at time of arrival)

    Pet Policy

    We love animals! We’re happy that you are traveling with man’s best friend!  

    Because of some of our guest’s allergies, sensitivities,and sometimes fear of pets we ask pet owners to be respectful towards other guests when staying with their pets. 

    We only allow dogs to stay in private room#5 with their humans. Please observe the following rules:        

    Dogs are not allowed on the bed.    

    Please bring a kennel or bed for your four legged friend.  

    Don’t leave your pet unattended in your room, and bring your pet with you when yougo.       

    Please keep pets on a leash.        

    Please clean up after your pets.        

    Please limit your pet to your room, unless you’ve ‘okayed it with other Hostel guests.       

    We have a resident dog named Charlie. He has free roam of our homestead, so please be respectful of his space. Charlie the dog is a Karelian Bear Dog mix. A Karelian Bear Dog is the national dog of Finland, and in its home country the dog is regarded as a national treasure. We think Charlie is a gem, and he sure thinks all of our guests are too! 

    Our neighbors have elderly horses that past guest’s pets have harassed, jeopardizing their horse’s health. If your pet is caught harassing the neighbor’s horses you will be asked to leave and you will not be refunded.

You’ll find information about trail conditions, aurora borealis map, and daily specials. www.visitcookcounty.com ~ this site has trail conditions as well as a local guide for all restaurants, outfitters, and other venues in the area.  

    Hungry Hippie Hostel reserves the right to decline any booking at our discretion. 

    Please be kind and courteous to fellow hostel guests, hostel employees and our family, and follow our house rules. Those who fail to comply will be asked to leave the premises without a refund.

    Theft, vandalism, or extortion

    You should not take property that isn’t yours, use someone’s property without their permission, copy others’ keys or identity documents, damage others’ property, remain in listings after a stay is concluded, or threaten anyone with bad ratings or any other penalty or harm to obtain compensation or other benefits.

    Safety

    Your Hungry Hippie Hostel experience begins the moment you embrace adventure. That’s only possible when you trust this community and feel safe. As a result, we require that you refrain from endangering or threatening anyone.

    Harming yourself or others
    You should not convey an intent to harm anyone by your words or physical actions. We also take threats of self-harm as seriously as we do actions and may intervene if we become aware of a threat.You should not commit physical or sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, domestic violence, robbery, human trafficking, other acts of violence, or hold anyone against their will. Members of dangerous organizations, including terrorist, organized criminal, and violent racist groups, are not welcome in this hostel. The Hungry Hippie Hostel is committed to working with law enforcement as appropriate and responding to valid law enforcement requests.
