'The Mardale Inn at St Patrick's Well' in Bampton, Cumbria, is owned and operated by Bampton Valley Community Pub, a Community Benefit Society comprising over 500 Shareholder Members who all came together in 2022 to 'Save a Pub for the Valley'.
Our inn is located within the north-eastern boundary of the Lake District National Park which enables easy access to the M6 (10 mins from Shap Junction) and the West Coast Main Line (Penrith Railway Station is 20 mins away by taxi). There are many things to do in the area.
For those who walk, Wainwright's Far Eastern fells are on our immediate doorstep as are some notable Outlying Fells like Knipe Scar. You can explore the original Mardale Valley (now submerged under Haweswater Reservoir), or visit Wild Haweswater or Wild Intrigue for some amazing wildlife adventures at RSPB Naddle. Lowther Castle & Gardens is one of the undiscovered gems of the Lake District at the northern end of our Valley.
'Withnail & I' fans can visit the original locations from the film in Bampton Valley. Within 20 minutes drive you may find yourself enjoying spectacular Ullswater, the Yorkshire Dales or the Eden Valley.
In The Mardale Inn building we offer four first floor bedrooms above the pub bar which have all been newly refurbished in 2023 to a high standard. Each room has either an en-suite or private bathroom. We also have two Annex bedrooms (newly acquired from Bampton Village Shop) in Norbrock House, 75m from the pub. These are also furnished to a high standard, have en-suites and benefit from new beds and mattresses. Dogs are very welcome to stay in these Annex rooms subject to a £10 per stay cleaning fee. (Dogs may always accompany their well behaved owners in the pub too!)
To ensure a comfortable night's sleep, all of our six bedrooms feature The Herdy Company’s British made, luxury, pocket sprung HerdySleep® mattresses. These champion locally sourced Herdwick Wool bought directly from Cumbrian upland fell farms at fair trade rates. Wool regulates body temperature and is a healthy, natural way to get a good nights rest. In the pub, our bedroom carpets are also 100% wool based, manufactured within 100 miles of Cumbria, again using locally sourced wool from Herdwick and Swaledale sheep.
Operating on a 'community hub first' principle, 'The Mardale Inn at St Patrick's Well' offers an enticing selection of high quality food - while not pretending to be a 'destination gastropub'. Our drinks feature well-kept local real ales, local gins as well as keg beers and international wines. Breakfast is served from 8AM to 930AM. Dinner is available from 530PM to 8PM.
Come and stay with us for a few nights if you are looking for an authentic rural inn experience on the quiet, unspoilt side of the Lake District National Park.
** Spring & Summer 2023 is our first season of offering rooms again so we are deliberately restricting availability until we are confident that all aspects of the operation are meeting our target standards. If you cannot find dates available that match your needs, please email us at reservations@themardaleinn.com as we may be able to work something out for you **
